Simple Tomato Sauce for pizza or pasta is ready in 15 minutes, inexpensive and most importantly delicious.
There is no reason to buy bottled or jarred pizza sauce. If you keep some canned tomatoes around you’d be surprised at all that you can make from it. Simple tomato sauce for pizza is one of those ideas.
How To Make Simple Tomato Sauce For Pizza or Pasta
There are only a few ingredients involved, about 5 minutes tops hands on time and if you like, about 10 minutes of simmering.
I say “if you like” because cooking the simple tomato sauce is up to you. I think 10 minutes is the perfect amount of time to cook down some of the liquid and take some of the raw taste out of the tomatoes.
But if you are running out of time go ahead and use the sauce as is without simmering it. The tomato sauce will have a stronger taste of fresh tomatoes and be thinner in consistency than a cooked sauce. For pasta this is fine. If you are using the simple tomato sauce for pizza you’ll want to use a slotted spoon to drain some of the liquid to keep the crust from getting soggy.
There is another tip to keeping your pizza sauce from getting soggy, and that’s to cool the simple tomato sauce before putting it onto the pizza crust. That’s why when you make pizza you’ll want to start with the tomato sauce first, once it’s simmered for 10 minutes remove from the heat to cool. You can even transfer the sauce out of the pan into a bowl to cool quicker.
Start the simple tomato sauce for pizza and pasta with a can of diced tomatoes. You can use as is or squeeze the tomatoes between your fingers for a finer consistency. I’d say most people like the diced tomatoes squeezed so that they are so chunky on the pizza. If you are using the sauce for pasta then no need to squeeze them, most people like a chunkier sauce.
How To Store Simple Tomato Sauce For Pizza or Pasta
You can store the simple tomato sauce in the refrigerator for about 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months. It’s still good after 3 months in the freezer but the texture of the tomatoes starts to degrade at this point.

Recipe Notes
It's not necessary to cook the simple tomato sauce. I like the consistency better, but if you are tight on time skip the simmering. The cooking takes some of the raw tomato taste out and thickens the sauce.
