The first time I heard about a Hawaiian Pizza the ingredients didn’t sound appetizing to me, which is funny because just behind a vegi pizza, a Hawaiian is my favorite.
The perfect Hawaiian pizza recipe combines the unusual combination of Canadian bacon and pineapple on flatbread. I like to toss some seasoned arugula on top of my slices, it takes the Hawaiian pizza recipe over the top.
There is a small restaurant in Atlanta called Shorty’s that names their pizzas after musicians, my go to at Shorty’s is a Biggie Smalls (named after a famous rapper). I’ll be posting my version of this pizza at a later date. Point being, it is topped with arugula and now has me adding that as a topping to almost any pizza.
What is on a Traditional Hawaiian Pizza Recipe?
A small amount of tomato or pizza sauce, Canadian bacon and/or crisped regular bacon, pineapple and mozzarella cheese are the staples. As I stated earlier, I put dressed arugula on top of mine but that isn’t considered traditional for a Hawaiian pizza recipe.
Who Was The Inventor of Hawaiian Pizza?
Before I started writing this post I would have guessed it was that popular 80’s restaurant chain California Kitchen. I’m pretty sure that’s where I had my first Hawaiian pizza. But when I started investigating it seems unanimous that a Greek-Canadian man named Sam Panopoulos dreamed up the Hawaiian pizza recipe in the 1960’s in his small restaurant in Canada. Sadly Sam passed away in 2017. Hats off to you Sam, you gave the world a unique and delicious treat.
How Do You Make a Hawaiian Pizza?
It’s helpful to use room temperature dough and a hot pan or stone for this Hawaiian pizza recipe. When you preheat the oven, place the or an upside down to heat along with the oven.
To keep the dough from sticking to the stone and your hands, use a little cornmeal or flour, just don’t overdo it. We also use or use the handy that fit your baking tray perfectly. The parchment paper will turn brown when in a hot oven like 450 degrees.
Hawaiian Pizza Recipe With Ham & Pineapple
Traditional Hawaiian Pizza has the Canadian bacon and pineapple with a few extras, try adding our dressed arugula for a yummy twist
Ingredients
- 1 Pound Pizza dough from grocery bakery section
- 1/3 Cup Low Sodium Tomato Sauce Canned
- 1 1/2 Cups Mozzarella Cheese Shredded
- 4 Slices Canadian Bacon chopped, or thickly sliced deli ham
- 3 Slices Thick cut bacon cooked crisply and chopped
- 14 Ounces Pineapple Diced, I usually use well drained canned pineapple
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Ideally you want to put your baking stone or an upside down baking tray in the oven to heat.
-
Sprinkle some cornmeal or flour on parchment paper and stretch your dough into a rough circle or rectangle, about 12" X 15". If the dough keeps springing back, walk away for about 10 minutes to let the dough rest, it will stretch better after letting it sit.
-
Spread tomato sauce evenly over the dough, leaving about 1/2" rim.
-
Top with cheese, Canadian bacon, cooked regular bacon and well drained pineapple. You may want to dab the pineapple with a paper towel to dry it even more.
-
Pull the baking stone or baking tray out of the oven, place the parchment paper with pizza on top and pop back into the oven for about 15 minutes or until it's golden and the cheese is melted.
Recipe Notes
Fun Topping: I like to dress some arugula with balsamic vinegar and add it to my slice of pizza after it's been cooked.
Pizza Dough: Most groceries have pizza dough. Publix has a great pizza dough that's found in their bakery section in the refrigerator. If you don't see it, ask one of the nice Publix clerks behind the counter baking the bread, sometimes the pizza dough isn't in the most obvious place.
Don't have Canadian bacon? You can use deli ham as a substitute, but it should be thickly sliced so that it doesn't overcook when baking the pizza
